1:1 personalized coaching
Fully individualized training, unlimited communication, and a program built around your goals and your real life.
Professional runner and running coach, with hopes of representing Canada at LA 2028.
20 years of running and racing
Running has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in Vancouver, where my dad co-owned The Runinn, an independent specialty running store. Both of my parents have been runners their whole lives, and my dad raced at an elite level in Australia before opening the store.
I started competing at a young age, eventually racing at the national level and representing Canada on junior and senior Pan Am cross-country teams. I spent my first couple of university years at the University of Washington before returning home to race track and cross-country for the UBC Thunderbirds.
These days I am based in Ottawa and coached by Brant Stachel. I split my time pretty evenly between training and coaching, running 125 to 145 miles most weeks while continuing to chase my own goals in the marathon as a professional runner and Olympic hopeful.
I am not exactly a household name, but a few recent races have put me a little more on the map. In March 2026 I won the McKirdy Micro Marathon in 2:09:25, setting a course record and becoming the fourth-fastest Canadian marathoner of all time. Next up is the Chicago Marathon, with plenty more I still want to chase beyond it.
I actually started coaching when I was 12, helping with the junior development athletes at Vancouver Olympic Club. My own coaches, Besnik and Tatjana Mece, showed me how much it matters to give back to the sport, so I volunteered at meets and helped coach younger athletes whenever I could. Since then I have coached several high school teams, served as head coach of the East Vancouver division of the Vancouver Thunderbirds Track & Field Club, and earned NCCP certifications through Athletics Canada.
Today I work with runners across the full spectrum, from people training for their first 5K or trying to break five hours in the marathon to experienced athletes chasing sub-2:30. The goals may be different, but the job is the same: meet people where they are, help them understand their training, and keep them moving forward.
Running is simply a vehicle for self-improvement and teaches you to deal with the challenges of the mile you're in.

Testimonials
What runners say about the training, communication, and support they receive.
I've been on a 3 year plateau before signing on with Tom. He is my 3rd coach and has been my best experience yet. I appreciate the time he commits to my post workout queries and our dialogue. The training is intentional and rewarding. I can't give him all of the credit, because I'm the one grinding through the workouts but He INVESTS in YOU. Our first training block is a breakthrough and I've stepped off the plateau. I'm looking forward to progressing and carrying on with his coaching.
I have been working with Tom for about 3 months now and I cannot rate him highly enough. From someone who has been deeply dissatisfied with previous running coaches, Tom has completely changed my mindset around regarding having a coach. He was recommended to me by a couple of friends and I am so happy I took the plunge. I am one of these people who has a multitude of hobbies and I really enjoy racing. Tom always tries to accommodate my adventures into my schedule, whilst ensuring that he gives me key workouts for my A-Race this year (Chicago Marathon). I never worry about what sessions to do, as they are all meticulously planned by Tom, and I really feel like I have been making progress with my speed and strength as a runner. He also keeps me accountable and is not afraid to tell me when I am doing too much! However, my favourite aspect of working with Tom is he is always there when I need advice, have a problem or just want to tell him a success! I genuinely couldn't be happier to have Tom as my coach and I am really excited to continue working with him for my future races (Tokyo 2027!!!) THANK YOU TOM FOR ALL YOUR EFFORT!!!!
I've been working with Tom for the past couple of months and the experience has been amazing so far! He's very responsive and tailors the program based on your goals and what works for you. He's even a great resource to talk about things outside of the training schedule like nutrition, gear/equipment, etc. Even when I haven't had a good workout/race, he's extremely optimistic and gets my headspace in a positive light so that I continue feeling even stronger. He's very supportive and always checks in on me after a tough workout or race. Highly recommend him as a coach to anyone looking to elevate their training and achieve their goals!
Tom is absolutely amazing in what he does! I am training with him since about 3 months and I am so stoked! He truly plans for one's goal races. I never have to question why I am doing a certain work-out because I always get why he wants me to make them. I have never felt so strong and also confident in my running. Also, he is always there to help you out on topics you may be struggling with (e.g. strength training, getting back the appetite, not being coordinationally able to do the variations of skips (drills), etc.). He replies within a day (I live in Europe, so we don't have the same time zone) and he is always open for a phone call. I couldn't be happier and am super excited to work with him for hopefully the next couple of years. Thank you Tom for putting your time and effort into your athlete! It is very appreciated.
I've been working with Tom for a few months now, and I can honestly say that it has been a great experience. Since he is my first running coach, I was a little unsure at the beginning about what to expect, but I quickly realized that working with a coach was the right choice for me. What stands out to me is how much effort Tom puts into making the training understandable and meaningful. It's not just about receiving workouts, he explains the purpose behind sessions and takes the time to discuss things like race strategy, nutrition, recovery, supplements, and warm-up routines. Those details have helped me better understand the bigger picture behind my training. I also really appreciate how flexible and personal his coaching is. Life doesn't always go exactly according to plan, and Tom is great at adapting the training around my schedule, travel, work, and other commitments. He listens, gives feedback, and makes sure the plan still fits my situation. Communication has also been excellent. Whether it's through WhatsApp, a call, or a video chat, he is always approachable and responds quickly whenever I have questions. Overall, working with Tom has been a very positive experience so far. I've learned a lot in a relatively short time, and I'm excited to continue improving and seeing where this journey takes me.
While I've only been working with Tom for a few months, I can confidently say that his coaching style is a great fit for me. He doesn't just assign workouts and weekly mileage. He takes the time to explain the reasoning behind the training and is always available to answer any questions I have. One of the things I appreciate most is how adaptable he is. If I'm feeling overly fatigued, or just not responding well to a workout, he's quick to adjust the plan. The training feels personalized rather than one-size-fits-all, which has given me a lot of confidence in the process. Tom is not only a knowledgeable coach but also a genuinely great person. Since he's my first running coach, I was a little hesitant about hiring one at first. Looking back, I can confidently say it was the right decision. Working with Tom has been a complete game changer for my training, and I've learned a tremendous amount from him in a short period of time.
Tom has been my coach for about a year now, and he's helped me through several half and full marathons. During that time, I've hit PBs at both distances and even achieved my ultimate goal of earning a BQ time. I honestly couldn't be happier with him as a coach! He is super friendly, patient, incredibly knowledgeable, and knows exactly how to push me out of my comfort zone in a way that gets results. As a busy mom of young kids, I really appreciate how manageable and flexible his training plans are. He is always checking in, supportive, and quick to adjust workouts when life happens. What I've also appreciated is that Tom doesn't just focus on the good races. I've had tough ones too, where things just didn't go as planned. Instead of treating it like a failure (like I did), he helped me break down what happened, what was within my control, and what I could learn from it. On top of being a great coach, Tom is also an elite athlete himself, so it's been really inspiring (and fun!) watching him crush his own races, and he somehow stays incredibly humble about it too. Without hesitation, I'd recommend him to anyone looking for a coach who genuinely cares, knows his stuff, and helps you become a stronger, more confident runner. It's been such a great experience working with Tom, and I'm super excited to see what he has in store for me next!
I cannot recommend Tom enough. He's been a great coach! Very knowledgeable in what he does. Took us from novice runners to completing two half marathons. The training plans also were accommodating to any obstacles we faced during training. Again, can't recommend him enough. Thank you Tom!
I can't recommend Thomas enough. He brings a wealth of knowledge to every session and provides great structure through Final Surge, which was instrumental in my preparation for the half marathon. He helped me stay disciplined and focused on my long-term progress, ensuring I was ready for race day. He's not just a coach; he's a great motivator who knows exactly when to push you and when to focus on recovery.
It's been a real pleasure working with Coach Tom over the past couple of months. I genuinely haven't had a better coaching experience. What stands out most is the care and belief he brings to his athletes. He's not just a coach, but a steady, reliable presence throughout the process, someone you can trust, and even call a friend. From planning to follow-through, everything is thoughtful and intentional. Working with him gives you confidence knowing you're in safe hands and moving in the right direction. His regular check-ins and willingness to make time never go unnoticed. Running can sometimes feel like a personal pursuit, which makes it all the more meaningful to have someone by your side every step of the way. I've learned a lot about the sport through our conversations, and that growth is a direct reflection of his approach. Oh, and more importantly, I'm feeling fitter than I've ever been. If you're going to work with one coach, I'd recommend Thomas Nobbs without hesitation.
I've had a great experience working with Thomas Nobbs as my running coach. He is extremely knowledgeable and always takes the time to answer any questions I have, no matter how small. Each week, he sets a clear and structured workout schedule, which makes it easy to stay consistent and focused. What really stands out is how regularly he checks in, he reviews my data, provides thoughtful comments, and asks insightful questions to make sure I'm progressing well. He also makes a point to ask about any injuries or concerns, which shows he genuinely cares about my well-being, not just performance. Working with him gives me a lot of confidence and comfort, knowing I'm on the right track toward my goals. I would absolutely recommend Thomas to anyone looking for a supportive, attentive, and highly skilled running coach.
I truly could not have made it this far in my marathon journey without my coach. He brings a remarkable depth of knowledge, rooted in a lifetime of running experience and formal training across all levels of the sport. From our very first virtual meeting, he demonstrated exceptional commitment and encouragement. He took the time to thoroughly understand my fitness level, goals, and any prior injuries, allowing him to establish an accurate baseline and design a personalized, realistic training plan tailored specifically to me. Since then, he has remained consistently available and supportive, offering comprehensive guidance well beyond just running schedules. His expertise spans mobility, stretching, strength training, nutrition, and gear; ensuring a truly holistic approach to performance and injury prevention. I cannot recommend him highly enough. Whether you are a beginner or an elite runner, his knowledge, dedication, and individualized approach make him an outstanding coach.
I've been running for just over two years, spending part of that time with a coach and part of it self-coached. I've now reached a point where I truly need individualized support and a training program that is built for me and adapted as I progress. Tom does an excellent job of monitoring my performance and creating a plan tailored specifically to me. This is where I've seen most AI tools fall short, they often miss the nuance needed to build a program that supports progress while reducing the risk of injury. Not only does Tom provide a rock-solid training program for an athlete who wants to continue improving, but he also takes the time to check in and help me prepare for upcoming races. That support ensures I feel ready for race day and puts me in the right mindset heading into competition. It's also incredibly valuable that Tom is an outstanding athlete himself. I can ask him the unique race-related questions that come up, and I know I'm getting advice from someone with the experience to back it up. Since Tom became my coach, my performance and endurance as a runner have improved quickly. I'm excited for the consistent progression ahead.
Tom has been amazing to work with! After coming back from injury, I wasn't too sure what to expect, but he's made the whole process feel really enjoyable. He's super knowledgeable, friendly, and always quick to respond whenever I have questions. He's helped me rediscover running at a pace and level that actually works for me now, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. Amazing value too. Couldn't recommend him more!
I highly recommend coach Tom. I've been working with Tom for the last 2 months. For two years, I kept getting injured as mileage and intensity built up while following standardized training plans for my 1:20 half marathon goal. When I started working with Tom, we had a long and detailed discussion of my run and sport (and injury) history and taking all the factors into account he has been guiding me with personalized workouts (run, strength and cross training) on the Final Surge platform. It is clear that Tom genuinely cares about each athlete he is working with. He is very responsive (daily) through email, text and on the Final Surge platform to discuss anything: workout focus, injury worries or otherwise. I appreciate being able to tap into his experience to adjust the training intensity and focus around my realities (life, travel, other sporting or dance commitments, aches or injury scares). He proactively checks in about progress and injuries and sends informative materials about various aspects of the sport. So far, I've been able to build up to my highest sustained mileage in a long time and the variety of workouts continue to challenge me in new ways. I feel more confident with all that I am learning from working with such a talented athlete and dedicated coach and would recommend Tom to runners of any level.
Nothing but great things to say about Coach Tom! He's helped guide me out of an injury cycle in a very short duration and getting me back on track to continue my journey as a runner. He uses science and data based approach and provides detailed notes and plans, as well as super responsive and reaches out often. If you want to run fast, Tom is your go to!
I have had the best experience with Coach Tom. I am also a TRR coach and hence am extremely picky when it comes to my coach and running plan. He has met me exactly where I am at and is very detail-oriented. I feel so supported with my plan and am so excited to see where this next year takes me. He is knowledgeable and great at giving positive feedback! We have made some tweaks to my training from what I normally do and I already feel the benefits. I am so thankful I found him on Team RunRun!
Working with him is a fantastic experience! He is incredibly kind, approachable, and genuinely invested in his athletes. What stands out most is how personalized his training plans are, they are thoughtfully tailored to your specific goals while remaining flexible enough to adapt to real-life schedules and unexpected changes. He listens carefully, provides clear guidance, and gives constructive feedback that builds both confidence and consistency. His communication is responsive and supportive, and he creates an environment that feels motivating without pressure. I would highly recommend him to runners at any level.
In just a few months of working together with Tom, I can feel myself becoming an immensely better runner. This is by far the most prepared I've been going into a marathon, all thanks to Tom's people-first coaching and reachability any day of the week. If you're like me, an enthusiastic amateur runner used to cookie-cutter programs but who wants to take his training to the next level, don't hesitate to start working with Tom.
I have been training with Tom for the last several months. Came across him through instagram and word of mouth and seeing him flying at the Toronto half marathon in October. It has been a great experience so far: his scheduling is well-structured and intentional. He's approachable and is great at explaining why we are doing what we are doing, which I think is essential to becoming a better athlete. Overall, Tom's a supportive coach with a wealth of experience. Excited to see where things go!
I have had a great experience with Tom as my running coach! He checks in regularly with me about how things are going and has been incredibly supportive in making tweaks and adjustments to keep me feeling my best while getting back into running. I have big goals and Tom has been a huge support in making these goals happen.
I am so grateful to have come across Thomas! I had spent 2 years struggling to improve in the marathon distance and after yet another blow up I reached out to Thomas. In just 7 weeks he was able to build my confidence and strength to allow me to have a 9 minute PB and run a 2:45 marathon. He has forever changed the way I will think about running.
I started my running journey in my mid-40s, completing a half marathon and a full marathon in my first year of running. After completing the full marathon, I had great intentions to run another, but recognized that my self-prescribed training regimen had reached its limits. I reached out to Tom for help, and I'm glad I did. Tom and I discussed my goals and the challenges I faced in the full marathon. He then took me under his wing and provided me with a solid training regimen. I've worked with Tom for over three months now. Over that time, I feel that my strength and mileage have steadily improved. Tom is really good at staying connected and is always responsive whenever I have questions. Furthermore, he's been understanding and adaptive when my training was interrupted by unexpected family priorities. I really enjoy working with Tom, and I look forward to training with him as I continue my running journey!
I was pleased to work with Tom ahead of the 2024 Eugene Marathon, where I ran a 7-minute PB of 2:49 and subsequently qualified for Boston 2025, which was the ultimate goal. In 2023, I had run 2:56 on my own, which fell short of the qualifying standard. I knew I wanted to work with someone with some experience to help get me across the line. Previously, I had shied away from coaching because of my erratic work schedule and multisport habits over the winter period (ski touring, swimming, biking, etc.). I worried that it would be too much of a hassle to incorporate a consistent workout schedule with a coach. However, Tom was easy to communicate with and the platform allowed me to schedule other commitments and activities that he was able to incorporate. Ultimately, not having to do my own programming and having an experienced voice to lean on was invaluable. Tom was communicative and I appreciated his encouraging comments throughout the week. I look forward to working with Tom again for Boston 2026!
I've been training with Coach Tom for a few months now and it has been incredibly valuable. You can really tell he cares about his athletes, by how detailed his programs are and how promptly and consistently he communicates. With Tom bringing his elite running background into my training plan, I'm excited to unlock new running PRs for the 2026 season.
The BEST! Helped me complete a marathon well under my goal time. When I'm ready for my next race, he'll be my go-to coach!
Tom has helped us train over the past three months for a half marathon, which we successfully ran and finished just this past weekend. My husband and I were fairly new to running and had the ambitious goal of completing a half marathon. Tom kindly took us on and coached us through the proper way to train for our goal, helping us adapt based on our progress. He always promptly answered our questions in detail and we never once felt judged for asking beginner questions. He also followed up on a week-to-week basis to ensure we were still on track and feeling good with the past week's training. At any skill level, I truly feel that Tom would be an amazing coach. Thanks for everything!
I began training with Thomas with the goal of running a sub-3 hour marathon. Before working with him, I had run a 3:03 in my first marathon off my own plan. During that training block I struggled with Achilles tendinitis, which caused major inconsistencies in my mileage. Thomas and I started 16 weeks before the Royal Victoria Marathon. At the time, I was only managing about 20 km per week. In 16 weeks, Thomas built my volume up gradually, eventually peaking at just over 100 km per week in weeks 12 to 14. His approach kept me completely injury-free while steadily improving my conditioning and endurance. The result: I ran a 2:55 marathon, taking nearly nine minutes off my previous time. This breakthrough would not have been possible without Thomas' methodology, structure, and programming. Along with the run plan, he provided a complete strength program, a race-week protocol, and a detailed race-day strategy, all of which played a huge role in my success. I would gladly work with Thomas again on another race and recommend him to any runner looking to reach their goals.
I'm just starting my 4th month training with Tom and I couldn't be more happy with his guidance and skill level. Tom has been working with me to build a program that works with my lifestyle. I have learned that with consistency and commitment, progress can happen very quickly. Tom is both supportive and encouraging helping me go from 40+ minutes on my 5k's to sub 30! I am excited to keep working with Tom and see what else I am capable of. Fantastic coach!
The best gift I gave myself this year was hiring a running coach. I came across Tom's profile and liked his style and performance, so I decided to go with him. I've been working with Tom for eight months, and my VO2 max has already gone from 48 to 52. He really knows the science behind running, and I think anyone can benefit from that. He guides me through running and cycling. He's always available and efficient when it comes to making any changes to the initial plan. I already feel like Tom is my friend. Good stuff! It makes our communication easy and accessible! He follows up well and is always attentive to my needs. I feel like my engine is so much stronger and more enduring, love it! Tom is a really good coach, I recommend him to anyone who is already an athlete or a beginner!
I have been working with Tom since January 2025, about 6 months now. The difference between his training and training on my own is night and day. I really value the structure his plan offers, he makes it easy to stay consistent and the results have shown very quickly. He is also very responsive when needed and understanding, he is able to make changes that will help me stay accountable and successful.
Absolute gem of a person and coach. 2 months ago I started working with Thomas as it was a no-brainer and I immediately felt confident in his philosophies. Thomas does a great job of explaining the 'why' behind what we do and always has the program loaded and ready to go when needed so there is no wondering of what is ahead. I have already seen noticeable shifts in fitness and I am excited for what the future holds in us working together!
I have been working with Tom since January 2025, and even before Tom officially became my coach, he was kind enough to build a strength and diet plan for me as I recovered from a previous injury. I believe this action shows Tom's true character, as he goes above and beyond to make sure I understand each workout, how the workouts fit into the goal I'm trying to achieve, all while having fun with it. He is very responsive and uses his vast experience to curate plans for my goals, and fit it around a very busy corporate schedule. Coming from a non-running background, Tom has helped me gain knowledge quickly about the sport, and increased my confidence in my own ability. I don't have enough great things to say about Tom as a coach and person, and would recommend him to anyone!
If you are looking for a coach, Tom is the man! Many months ago I randomly stumbled upon his page and well let's just say the rest is history so I reached out. He built me a solid plan that worked with my schedule and included certain key workouts and knowledge that only the ones that are experienced could offer. I look up to his capabilities and am inspired by what he does! So grateful to have a coach and mentor to guide me through the process because there are a lot of intricacies that can often be overlooked. Already Tom has started my next plan and goes above and beyond providing extra info that will guide me to the finish line without a doubt helping me crush my goals! Look forward to this plan and many more to come. Delivers everything you would need and much more with a smile on his face! Thanks coach.
I have had the pleasure of working with Coach Thomas for the last several months and I have been incredibly impressed with his coaching style thus far. I can't recommend Tom highly enough! His approach to coaching is a perfect blend of modern science, personalized guidance, and genuine care for his athletes. He stays up-to-date with the latest research in exercise science, which means every aspect of his training plans is grounded in proven methods, from injury prevention to performance optimization. He takes a unique approach to suit each individual runner's needs and goals. One of the standout aspects of working with Tom is how approachable and communicative he is. Whether I had questions about my workouts, concerns about a potential tweak, or needed adjustments to fit my schedule, he was always quick to respond and incredibly supportive. It's clear that he genuinely cares about his athletes and is invested in their success. He is always accessible via text and Final Surge. If you're looking for a coach who combines scientific expertise with a personalized and supportive approach, Tom is the one for you. My running has improved more than I would have expected over a short period of time. Coach Tom has definitely made me stronger and more motivated than ever!
Tom was a wonderful coach, helping me slowly ramp up in my running journey. As a beginner who was struggling to make strides, Tom broke things down and kept it simple. If you want an understanding and responsive coach that makes things feel possible, I can't recommend Tom enough.
I've had Tom as my coach for the last 6 months, and he's been an excellent coach! With Tom's experience and knowledge in the sport, he's helped me structure my running to be more effective and get to race day injury free. Tom is always available for any questions I have about the training plan. Whether it's a question about a scheduled workout, or just a general question about training he is always happy to talk through things and gives detailed explanations and advice. Alongside the running, he has programmed in strength training that targets running related mechanics and muscles to help stay strong and injury free. When I did have a minor injury during my half marathon block, he provided me with tips and advice about recovering from it and modified the training plan to accommodate the injury. With Tom's coaching, I've recently completed my goal half marathon race with a new PR and a much faster time than I was anticipating. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with Tom and working toward my next running goals! With Tom as my coach I am much more confident in my future running goals and more optimistic about what I can achieve. I would recommend him to anyone looking to take their training to the next level!
Been working with Tom for a couple of months now and couldn't be happier! He's the first running coach I've had but it's been absolutely fantastic experience working with him. Tom is very thoughtful and thorough and is always available if I have questions or want to go over anything. I'd highly recommend Tom to anybody and am looking forward to continue building and smashing PRs together!
I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge Coach Tom for being an incredible running coach! His programs have truly helped me improve my running abilities here in Cyprus. I can confidently say he's a 5-star trainer! Whenever I have a busy day and can't stick to the plan, he's always quick to provide an alternative that keeps me on track. His guidance and support mean so much to me, and I'm grateful for all that he does. Thank you, Coach Tom!
Tom is by far one of the greatest coaches I have ever had. The amount of times I would call him and he would sit there and explain the process or why this exercise would improve my running helped me grow as a runner so much. He taught me so much and I am sad our time has come to an end. I look forward to our next training block in a few months and look forward to crushing more goals and learning even more! If you are looking for a coach who really cares, do not hesitate to use Tom!
This is a delayed review, but I must say something about Mr Thomas Nobbs. My friend and I wanted to train for an ultra-marathon challenge we created. Tommy Nobbs, as we referred to our coach, gave us a very detailed plan for achieving this in a short timeline; he also called us countless times to discuss our questions and the process. He would constantly explain why the workouts were structured a certain way and check in that we had completed them. I unfortunately got injured, so I could not complete my challenge, but throughout the training, I got into fantastic fitness and was in the best running shape ever in my life. If you want a coach who can back up his workouts, who is faster than all the other coaches on this platform, and who can make you reach your goals, Tommy Nobbs is for you; I had a great two months of training under his guidance and can't wait to get healthy and try it again.
I have been working with Tom for the last couple of months and have been really happy with the results so far. Tom quickly replies to any questions I have and is great at tailoring the plan to fit my needs. It was amazing to see that after only a month of a structured running plan with Tom, I am already seeing huge improvements on my speed and how I feel running!
